ULTRA VIOLENTA EDITIONS: ARTISTIC FANZINE, EVENTS, TRAINING, AND FANZINE LIBRARY
The Concept Behind This Editorial Project
ISSN 2184-8629
Ultra Violenta Editions began its journey with the Fanzine Ultra Violenta, an artistic fanzine founded and published in Portugal by Miguel Correia in early 2020.
This visual and conceptual exploration project brings together various artists, mainly from Portugal but also from other parts of the world.
Each issue has a unique theme and features a group of four to five artists from diverse fields. Each artist makes a free interpretation of the chosen theme. For every issue, the artist is also given a colored sheet previously altered with some textures to create an editorial guiding line and to encourage the start of the creative process. Besides this sheet and the chosen theme, there are no constraints or additional briefings.
The results have proven to be very expressive and varied, with a visual style that ranges from punk and grunge culture to urban graffiti culture, as well as embracing the manifestos of the Dadaist art movement.
This project takes us back to the pre-digital era, a time when fanzines were the preferred medium of dissemination for artists, musical bands, photographers, writers, and illustrators. A time when information was scarce, and the best way to assert an ideology or conviction was through these types of publications. Characterized by being produced with simple means—mostly self-published—these works used a mixed-media creative process, employing various techniques such as photography, cutouts, drawing, collages, and also leveraging the iconic expressiveness of Xerox photocopiers and risography. All of this was used to create a new artistic dissemination medium, one that people could share and through which they could assert and debate opinions.
Fanzine Ultra Violenta aims to encourage this form of artistic expression and engage the participating artists in a creative process of sharing and experimentation.
Currently, beyond this experimental editorial project, Ultra Violenta Editions have expanded their activity to organizing events related to independent publishing and also offering training actions on free editorial design and alternative publications. In parallel, they founded the Fanzineteca of Aveiro.
