TRAINER:
Helena Zália

Born on an April dawn in Guimarães.
Raised in the countryside, she believes that this direct contact with nature sharpened her curiosity, restless spirit, wonder for her surroundings, and above all, the instinct to transform/create things—while deep roots anchored her to images, drawing, colors, books, and the fascination with artistic creation in its various forms.
The obvious path was to pursue education in the arts, a natural choice made during her school years. Her academic background includes Visual Education [Escola Superior de Educação de Leiria] and Communication Design/Graphic Production [University of Aveiro and University of Barcelona].
Alongside this, painting, printmaking, photography, sewing, creating three-dimensional characters, and illustration have all served as means of expression and communication throughout the years.
From time to time, she exhibits her work in both group and solo exhibitions, mainly in the field of illustration. She has illustrated several children’s stories. In 2012, she created the permanent installation “With Feet on the Ground and Head in the Clouds” for the Museu do Brincar [Vagos].
In 2016, responding to her passion for the book as an object, she founded zai-zai edições, where she creates handcrafted, custom-made books. She currently lives and works between Guimarães and Gafanha da Nazaré [Ílhavo].

CONTEXTUALIZATION:
The washed drawing technique consists of creating images through drawing and a development process using inks and water.

DESCRIPTION:
With “Washed Drawing,” you will experiment with an artistic/plastic expression technique where gouache and India ink interact with brushes and drawing tools, revealing and discovering textures.
Next, the drawings are literally washed under a tap. Something magical happens — the results are always unexpected and surprising.
Dark areas are uncovered, and bright spots are revealed.

MATERIALS AND TOOLS:
Graphite pencils; 250g/300g watercolor paper; white gouache; black India ink; brushes; skewers.

GENERAL NOTES:
Workshops are limited to 20 participants, so please register in advance via the registration form accessible through the button below “Inscriptions (Here)”.
All necessary materials will be provided by the organization, though participants are welcome to bring their own.
At the end of the workshop, each participant will receive a personalized Certificate of Participation.

After the success of the first edition in 2021, FanzineUltraViolenta returns in 2022. The basic concept is the same – the theme of alternative visual culture and independent publishing – but its format has been expanded and made more relevant, becoming an event that we hope will lay the foundations for the largest European meeting of alternative visual culture and the “DiY” phenomenon to take place in Aveiro in the near future. The central theme will be independent publishing and the fanzine as a form of socio-cultural expression that is highly relevant to the underground urban “tribes” that have developed over the last sixty years.
This year’s edition has several activities, such as exhibitions of fanzines from collections that have never been made public, art exhibitions with the illustrations contained in these publications, fairs on independent publications, DIY workshops, a series of talks on graphic design and alternative music concerts.
