Happens on June 10, 11, and 12, at the University of Aveiro the XS Design Xpress 2022. It is an event created by the Design Student Group of the University of Aveiro that takes place in the Department of Communication and Art and consists of various activities such as workshops, open talks, and lectures about Design.
One of these activities is a fanzine editing workshop, taught by Miguel Correia, art director of Gula Visual, Creative Agency, and editor of the Ultra Violenta Fanzine.
In this workshop, an introduction to the concept of independent publications will be made, and some examples of publications for small press will be demonstrated.
We will present several printing resources commonly used in fanzines or artist books and will demonstrate various ways to edit content and do pagination and imposition, as well as the preparations necessary for their printing.
Participants will be invited to create some illustrations based on typographic resources used in alternative fanzines, punk and underground style from the 70s, 80s, and 90s of the last century. The result of the various compositions will be edited and reproduced during the workshop in A5 fanzine format.
At the end, each participant will take home the result of this joint work!
FANZINES EDITING WORKSHOP:
Theme: Typographic Resources of DIY Subcultures
CONTEXTUALIZATION:
The term fanzine is a combination of Fan (as an enthusiast or follower) and Zine (from magazine). It applies to non-commercial publications with a more underground tone, which usually serve as a vehicle for dissemination, exchange of ideas, or expression of opinion.
They are prolific in music and comic book scenes and are typically self-published and produced with simple resources and low budgets. This type of publication became popular in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, although it appeared earlier. Nowadays, there is a resurgence of this practice, which holds a certain appeal for fans of grunge design and alternative printed publications.
