TRAINER:
Rogério Guimarães
He was born in 1972. Although trained in Electrical Engineering, he has always had a strong inclination toward art as a way of understanding the world. He began seeking education in this area and, after attending several informal courses, completed a Master’s in Contemporary Artistic Creation at the Department of Communication and Art, University of Aveiro, in 2014. As part of his master’s thesis work, he briefly studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London.
In 2015, he helped establish AUROQUE – Cultural Association, an organization focused on exploring drawing in contemporary art. In 2019, his passion for more immediate forms of narrative led him to join the Clube do Desenho in Porto and begin experimenting with mimeography and risography. Since fully embracing art in his life, he has sought to balance his profession as an engineer with his explorations in drawing and graphic expression. He is one of the three founding members of the Artisterium Collective.
CONTEXTUALIZATION:
Risography is a form of digital stencil duplication. It is a low-cost document reproduction method that uses a stencil process similar to screen printing. This printing technique has been increasingly sought after by graphic designers, artists, self-publishers, fanzine creators, and others. It is increasingly considered an iconic product of the post-digital era, where the printing imperfections typical of this technique play a key role in the final aesthetic.
DESCRIPTION:
The workshop will last approximately 4 hours.
It will begin with an introduction, providing a brief overview of Risography (its history and operating principles), followed by a demonstration of the Risograph equipment provided on-site. Participants will then be invited to create original works on sheets of paper, which will be duplicated using the Risography technique. Participants’ works can include illustrations, written text, a small fanzine, etc. In this workshop, the available colors are black and medium blue (Riso Medium Blue).
MATERIALS AND TOOLS:
A4 paper, drawing tools, photographs; photocopies; magazine or newspaper clippings; transfer letters; stamps; papers.
X-acto knife or scalpel; scissors; glue stick, glue tube or spray adhesive; letter and shape guides.
GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS:
Some of the required materials will be provided by the organizers; participants may also bring their own.
At the end of the training, each participant may request their personalized Certificate of Participation.
