He currently holds the position of Art Director at the communication agency Gula Visual in Aveiro, of which he is a managing partner and co-founder.
He is also the editor of the artistic fanzine Ultra Violenta.
CONTEXTUALIZATION:
The term fanzine is a blend of “fan” (meaning an enthusiast or follower) and “zine” (short for magazine). It refers to non-commercial publications with an underground focus, typically serving as vehicles for sharing information, exchanging ideas, or expressing opinions. They are prolific within music and comic book communities.
Usually self-published and produced with simple, low-budget resources, this type of publication was very popular in the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, although it emerged earlier. Nowadays, there is a resurgence of this practice, which holds a certain appeal for fans of grunge design and alternative print publications.
DESCRIPTION:
An introduction to the concept of independent publications will be given. Several examples of small press publications will be demonstrated. Various printing techniques commonly used in fanzines or artist books will be presented. There will be demonstrations of different ways to edit content and perform layout or imposition, including the necessary preparations for printing.
Participants will be invited to create illustrations based on a theme to be defined, and the resulting illustrations will be edited and reproduced during the workshop in an A5 fanzine format. At the end, each participant will take home the collective work produced.

After the success of the first edition in 2021, FanzineUltraViolenta returns in 2022. The basic concept is the same – the theme of alternative visual culture and independent publishing – but its format has been expanded and made more relevant, becoming an event that we hope will lay the foundations for the largest European meeting of alternative visual culture and the “DiY” phenomenon to take place in Aveiro in the near future. The central theme will be independent publishing and the fanzine as a form of socio-cultural expression that is highly relevant to the underground urban “tribes” that have developed over the last sixty years.
This year’s edition has several activities, such as exhibitions of fanzines from collections that have never been made public, art exhibitions with the illustrations contained in these publications, fairs on independent publications, DIY workshops, a series of talks on graphic design and alternative music concerts.
